British Stars Of Tommorow Shine in Tampere - This Week In Athletics - 11/08/25Published by
This week in athletics there’s British success at the European U20 in Tampere and the return of Keely Hodgkinson looks even closer.
Fitzgerald Stars in Glittering British Weekend in Tampere Great Britain Team Captain Innes Fitzgerald took both the women’s 3000m and 5000m titles at the European U20 championships in Tampere, Finland. The Exeter based athlete took the 3000m title clocking 8:46.39 just days after storming to the 5000m title in 15:09.04. “It was a tough ask to do both, the 5000m and the 3000m are hard races so I am really pleased to come away with both titles,” she said. “The aim was to win the 5000m comfortably and then go out and see what I could do in the 3000m. “I am really pleased to come away with the championship record running a pretty decent solo race.”
It was also Gold for Charlotte Henrich in the 400m in a personal best of 51.86, Lyla Belshaw in the 1500m 4:14.56, with Isabelle Jones coming home for Bronze.
Rafferty Mirfin took the men’s 800m title ahead of Tom Waterworth.
In the field there were silvers for Otis Poole in the High Jump with a clearance of 2.19 and Thea Brown in the long jump leaping to 6.44 to secure her third age group medal.
Lucy Tallon of Tonbridge also took an incredible silver in the women’s 200m. Tallon’s performance rounded out three silvers for GB from the sprints as Mabel Akande and Teddy Wilson both took second in the 100m. Wilson shared his silver with the Netherlands' Jozuah Revierre as both clocked 10.47. Tallon and Akande also added to her medal tally alongside Nell Desir and Kaya Slater as the quartet took 4x100m silver.
Hodgkinson to return in Silesia. 800m Olympic Champion Keely Hodgkinson MBE is set to return even earlier than expected from a hamstring injury as she has been announced by this weekend's Silesia Diamond League.
The 23-year-old tore her hamstring in February and has gone on to announce and postpone her return on three separate occasions as she fights to get fit in time to compete at September's world championships where she remains outright favourite to take the title following silver medals in both Eugene in 2022 and Budapest 2023.
Hodgkinson will line up alongside Olympic relay medalist Lisanne De Witte, Abbey Caldwell and training partner Catriona Bisset in the non-points scoring race set to start at 14:52 BST.
Elsewhere in the meet Dina Asher-Smith goes in the 100m alongside Sha’carri Richardson, newly crowned US champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and both Tia and Tina Clayton with Daryl Neita and Amy Hunt starting in the 200. The men’s 100m is the headline event with 7 of the world's top 20 taking to the blocks. Olympic champion Noah Lyles will line up against former world champion Christian Coleman, Kishane Thompson, defending Diamond League champion Ackeem Blake, Akani Simbine, 2020 Olympic Champion Marcel Jacobs and Kenny Bednarek.
Armand Duplantis returns to the site of last year's final world record he’ll be up against an inform Emmanouli Karalis fresh from an exceptional 6.08m in the Greek National championships. Femke Bol will go in the 400m Hurdles whilst Yared Nguse sets off on his last ditch attempt to qualify for Tokyo following a disappointing showing at US trials. Harrow AC narrowly lead Thames Valley Harriers on overall Match Points with them both tied on 15 League Points Each to set up what could be their first ever NAL victory and the first time Thames Valley Harriers have been defeated since the competition's inception in 2020.
